Image Hack Assignment: Part Two
My Image Hack is titled “Climate InJustice: Life Out of Balance”.
It is meant to highlight the “balance” between rising levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, from burning fossil fuels, and the rising temperatures world wide as the Earth absorbs and retains more of the sun’s heat (due to increased CO2 levels).
This is probably one of the most important issues ever to arise in human history (although the proliferation of nuclear weapons, and the development of artificial intelligence are right up there, too).
The image I hacked was one of Justice, famous for the balance she holds, and usually shown as blindfolded to emphasize her impartial nature. Here, the eyes of Justice are covered only by the pall of smoke rising from burning barrels of oil.
I used two common phrases in juxtaposition to refine and disambiguate the message I intend: “Where There’s Smoke There’s Fire… and Smoke Gets In the Eyes”. These two “truisms” placed together contextualize the visual image composite, and direct the viewer to consider the “balance” between smoke (oil barrels) and fire (our overheating Earth) — and how eyes are averted from this crisis by the “smokescreen” that fossil fuel industries are using to guard their vested interest in the production and use of high carbon energy sources.
I think this poster could go anywhere and in fact could probably fit upon small stickers that could literally be put anywhere.
