M5 Project: An "Avatar" Make-over.

Well; there it is, my Avatar make-over.

I must confess, though — it looks a little more "Guardians of the Galaxy"...

Lots of masking on layers for this project! It was a little more difficult working with a black and white image, since there was no color information to aid in the selection process; so I ended up using the "Quick Mask" mode a lot, which paints a red overlay on areas which will be saved as a selection when "Quick Mask Mode is exited. Then, applying a layer mask to the image (a copy of the image, on a new layer of course) creates a mask that corresponds to whatever the selection was — pretty handy.
I used blend modes a lot, too — "Lighter color" (which helped to isolate added detail) and "Darker color" (which helped to bring out the background) but also "Color", which allowed me to keep the black and white shading of the original image when adding color to areas.

But I do think I ended up looking more like a Marvel Comics bad guy than an Avatar good guy!
